Domain Score Checker

What the Domain Score and the Domain Spam Score measure, how each check is weighted, why some checks are left out, and how to raise your score.

3 min read

The Domain Score Checker scores a sending domain from public signals and shows every check behind the score. It gives two numbers from the same checks: the Domain Score (0 to 100, higher is better) and the Domain Spam Score (0 to 100, higher is riskier).

Both are Eklow's own scores. They measure a domain as an email sender. They do not measure backlinks or search ranking and are not the domain authority or domain rating metrics SEO tools publish.

Run A Check

  1. Enter a domain, a website address or an email address. A leading www. is dropped; a sending subdomain such as mail.example.com is checked as entered.

  2. If your mail provider signs with its own DKIM selector, add it under More Options. The checker already tries the common selectors, plus Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 selectors when the domain's mail is hosted there.

  3. Press Check Domain. Results appear when every lookup has answered or timed out.

The Checks

CheckWhat is readDomain Score pointsSpam Score points
Domain ResolvesWhether the name exists in DNS55
Domain AgeRegistration date from the registry's RDAP service2015
MX RecordsMail servers, or a null MX (RFC 7505)105
SPF RecordOne valid record, under 10 lookups, not ending in +all1010
DKIM KeyA key on a common or provider selector1010
DMARC PolicyA record at _dmarc with a p= policy1010
HTTPS CertificateA TLS handshake with the website, at the domain or www105
BlocklistsThe domain and the servers behind its MX and website2530
Domain TypeFree mailbox provider or disposable domain010

A pass keeps all of a check's Domain Score points and adds no risk. A warning keeps part of them: for example DMARC at p=none keeps half and adds half its risk. A problem loses all of its points and adds all of its risk. The What Moved Your Scores table shows the points each check moved, and they always add up to the score shown.

Checks Left Out Of The Score

  • Couldn't Check: a lookup timed out, the registry publishes no registration date over RDAP, or no DKIM key was on the selectors tried. The check is left out and the other points are scaled back to 100.
  • Not Checked: the check does not apply. A domain that does not exist is checked for nothing else, and a free mailbox provider's records and blocklist status are the provider's, not yours.
  • Spamhaus, URIBL and SURBL are marked Not Checked until Eklow holds a commercial data feed for each. Their free services are for non-commercial use. They are never counted as clean.
  • A listing on a shared provider's server, or on a list that lists whole networks, is shown for context and not scored.

Raise Your Score

  1. Resolve any blocklist listing first: fix the cause, then request removal on the list's own site.

  2. Publish one valid SPF record ending in ~all or -all, and turn on DKIM signing with your mail provider.

  3. Publish a DMARC record, read the reports, then move from p=none to p=quarantine or p=reject.

  4. Put a page with a valid certificate on the domain, and publish MX records so replies arrive.

  5. On a new domain, warm mailboxes up slowly. Age only improves with time.

Domains In Eklow

Every sending domain in Eklow is checked under Senders → Domains: SPF, DKIM and DMARC are verified before anything sends, and a verified domain is re-checked every six hours, with a notification if it stops passing.
